چکیده

In a search for spectroscopic binaries in ! Cen, the radial velocities of 310 giant stars have been monitored with multiple observations over more than ten years. The percentage of binaries with periods from those allowed by the Roche lobe limit and up to the limit set by dynamical disruption is about a factor ve smaller than among G dwarfs in the solar vicinity in the same period range. Assuming a similar period distribution in ! Cen as for the nearby G dwarfs, we estimate the global binary frequency in ! Cen to be as low as 3 { 4%. In contrast to similar stars in the eld, the rich population of chemically peculiar giant stars (Ba, CH, S) in ! Cen seems to have a rather low binary frequency. The most massive of all globular clusters in our galaxy, ! Cen, is of special interest in the search for primordial binaries. With its moderate central concentration, ! Cen has probably preserved a large fraction of primordial bi-naries in its outer regions, since the relaxation time at the half-mass radius ((r 1=2) = 2:610 10 y) is larger than the age of the cluster. However, the present period range for primordial binaries among red giants is limited on the short-period side (P inf) by the onset of Roche-lobe overrow, and on the long-period side (P sup) by dynamical disruption. P inf is a function of the stellar radii and the binary mass ratio, and in our sample, P inf is mostly in the range 100 { 400 days. The upper limit of the period window, P sup , depends on position in the cluster in addition to the mass ratio. In the core P sup , as estimated from Hill's (1984) formalism, can be as short as three years due to the very large central velocity dispersion. In the outer regions, it can be as large as 10 years or more. Therefore, most of the primordial binaries among the giant of ! Cen are expected to have periods from 200 to 4000 days. Among the interesting characteristics of ! Cen are the large range in metal-licity and many chemically peculiar giants (Ba, CH, and S stars). In the eld, most or all of these chemically peculiar giants are known to be binaries with periods in the range P inf ; P sup ] (McClure 1983, Jorissen & Mayor 1992). Since …

Binary formation within globular clusters : X-ray clues

We have investigated the effect of the number of primordial binaries on the relationship between the total number of detected binaries within globular cluster and its collision rate. We have used simulated populations of binary stars in globular clusters : primordial binaries and binaries formed through gravitational interactions. We show that the initial number of primordial binaries influence...

Dynamical Formation of Close Binaries in Globular Clusters Ii: Cataclysmic Variables

We answer the long-standing question of which production mechanism is responsible for the cataclysmic variables (CVs) in globular clusters. Arguments have been given that range from mostly primordial presence to a significant contribution of later dynamical formation in close stellar encounters. We conclude, based on a thorough analysis of a homogeneous Chandra data set, that the majority of CV...

Binaries in Globular Clusters

Binary stars in a globular cluster (hereafter, GC) may be primordial (i.e. formed along with the cluster), or the result of cluster dynamics. “Dynamical” binaries can result from conservative threebody encounters (e.g. Spitzer, 1987) if a third star can carry away enough kinetic energy to leave two others bound, or from dissipative two-body encounters, if two stars happen to pass within a few s...

Close Approach during Hard Binary–Binary Scattering

It is now clear that there is a substantial population of primordial binaries in galactic globular clusters and that binary interactions are a major influence on globular cluster evolution. Collisional interactions involving stars in binaries may provide a significant channel for the formation of various stellar exotica, such as blue stragglers, X–ray binaries and millisecond pulsars. We report...

Primordial Binaries and Intermediate Mass Black Holes in Globular Clusters

We present the first study of the dynamical evolution of a star cluster that combines a significant population of primordial binaries with the presence of a central black hole. We use direct N-body simulations, with a black hole mass of about one percent of the total mass of the cluster. The evolution of the binary population is strongly influenced by the presence of the black hole, which gives...

A Stellar Audit: the Computation of Encounter Rates for 47 Tucanae and ! Centauri Received ** *** 1994; in Original Form 1994 *** **

Using King-Mitchie Models, we compute encounter rates between the various stellar species in the globular clusters ! Cen, and 47 Tuc. We also compute event rates for encounters between single stars and a population of primordial binaries. Using these rates, and what we have learnt from hydrodynamical simulations of encounters performed earlier, we compute the production rates of objects such as...
